Why Notting Hill is a classic romantic comedy ?

“I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” this iconic line was said by none other than Julia Roberts to Hugh Grant in the now classic movie “Notting Hill.”

Written by Richard Curtis, “Notting Hill” explores the love story between a normal book shop owner, “William Thacker” and a worldwide famous actress, “Anna Scott”. It represents the story of how a woman at the top of the hierarchy (who can do whatever and get whoever she wants) falls in love with an underdog/normal person.

As you watch the film, you can’t help but smile all the time. This movie depicts the nature of love, which transcends social norms and hierarchy.

Since the premise of the movie is basic, it is simple and uncomplicated. The viewer can really feel the chemistry between the two lovers. Anytime Roberts and Grant are on screen together, we feel a jolt of electricity. Hugh Grant turns in a fantastic performance, portraying the character of a regular guy with a quirky charm. In contrast, Julia Roberts portrays a lady who is too afraid to love and deeply insecure.

Unlike today, when it’s easy to talk to anyone through a smart phone, this film takes us to a simpler time without smart phones. There is no doubt that smart phones have made life easier, but they have also made it more complex in other ways. For those who were born before the invention of the smart phone, this can bring in a wave of nostalgia.

In spite of unexpected circumstances, the universe constantly draws these two lovers closer together in this movie. Also, the film could have emphasized the ugly and gritty aspects of life, instead focusing on the positive and optimistic sides.

Let’s not forget the main thing that made “Notting Hill” a hit classic which is the soundtrack itself. Elvis Costello’s cover of “She” perfectly captures the essence of the film and the alluring charm of Julia Roberts.

In addition, when Anna disappears from William’s life, he walks through Notting Hill with Bill Wither’s song “Ain’t No Sunshine” playing in the background. As he walks on the street, the weather changes from summer to rainy to windy to winter to spring. Watch not only for the pregnant woman and the breakup, but also for the changes in the produce on sale throughout the season (potatoes remain all year), and how slyly the scene is choreographed.

Grant’s demeanor changes gradually as he struggles with his heartbreak and eventually becomes more accepting. None the less, the details on this scene are on point.

Conclusion

If you want to watch a romcom with a happy ending (not the massage kind), Notting Hill is right for you. The story and the characters will draw you into the movie. With pleasant music and the right lines, this movie will make you cry and smile at the same time.

This movie is a classic love story that you can’t get enough of, no matter how many times you watch it.

P.S. we highly recommend this movie, if you want to watch it with your girlfriend or wife. Just remember to get the roses on the bed and candles ready after watching it.
