China Opens Winter Olympics 2022 in Spectacular Fashion

Last Friday night, February 4, 2022, China kicked off the Olympic Winter Games in spectacular fashion. Being held in Beijing, the opening ceremony to the Winter Games can only be described as dazzling.

A pair of young athletes, Dinigeer Yilamujiang and Zhao Jiawen, lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony. One of the highlights was when the holders of the Placards from 91 countries gathered to form a giant snowflake during the ceremony.

This masterpiece was crafted by none other than the film director Zhang Yimou. Mr. Zhang is also the person responsible for the grand opening and closing ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympics. In the 2008 Olympic games, 15,000 performers were involved. As compared to that year, only 3000 performers were involved this year.

Every year the Olympic torch makes its traditional trip from Olympia, Greece to the host country of the games. However, due to the Covid pandemic this year, the Olympic torch traveled from Tokyo to Athens on October 18, 2020 and from Beijing on October 20, 2020. Hence the torch couldn’t take the conventional trip this year.

By hosting the Winter Olympics, China becomes the first country to host the Olympics in two seasons. Over the course of this 16-day event, 2900 athletes will compete in 109 events across 15 sports disciplines.

We wish all the best to the athletes competing in the Olympic games of 2022.
