Rare Penis Plant blooms after 25 years

Mid-September this year, when we were busy with our lives, something rare happened in a Dutch University, Netherlands; Rare Penis Plant bloomed over 25 years. The plant is nicknamed, “Penis Plant” because of its shape. Scientifically known as Amorphophallus decus-silvae, needs hot and humid environment to grow, which is difficult in Europe.

Coming from a Indonesian background the plant is primarily known for its shape and foul smell. “The smell of the flower actually reveals whether it blooms or not” says Hortus Botanicus Leiden.

What are the phases of flowering process?

Penis Plant only blooms every two decades and this blooming plant in university’s botanical garden is a first seen since 1977.

Female blooms first

The white spadix, phallus shaped heats up and lets out a foul smell, much like rotting flesh. Which is a call for the pollinators, flies and such alike love the smell and flock to the plant.

Male Blooms second

In the second step, pollen are produced, covering the flies as they fly off to their next meal.

How does it bloom?

Susan Pell, the executive Director of the US Botanical Garden during an CNN interview said, ” Rare Penis Plant have corm root structure, where all the energy used for blooming is use. Now for the next bloom, the corm has to create a layer of leaves, which takes from three to 10 or 12 years.

Furthermore, to built the energy back, to bloom; the corm gets busy for another year.

As mentioned above, the bloom of  Amorphophallus decus-silvae is very difficult, but Postma  has managed to finally do it added Susan.

The Corpse Flower

Amorphophallus decus-silvae’s cousin, the corpse flower, Amorphophallus titanum, was displayed at an abandoned gas station in May earlier this year. Solomon Leyva, Alameda, Calif. Gardener  grew the corpse flower. Yes, you have guessed it, the flower emits a pungent stink.
